Beyond the Dataset: A New Ecosystem for Accountability

Last week, we partnered with the Media and Journalism Research Centre (MJRC) for a live research briefing titled "From Dataset to Headline." In a rich dialogue, Anmat's founder, Hager Hesham, and MJRC Director, Marius Dragomir, explored our "Framing Gaza" project and discussed how data science can transform our understanding of media narratives.

For those who missed it, the conversation showed how analysing over 25,000 articles can turn a "gut feeling" about bias into measurable evidence.

But this event highlights a core principle at Anmat: our work begins when a dataset is published.

The Story Continues: Data as a Public Good

At Anmat, we believe data is a living asset for the community. Our datasets are public goods, meant to be used, questioned, and built upon by journalists, researchers, and advocates. The story continues after our initial analysis, powered by new investigations and insights from our community.

Our model explained:

  • Powering Investigative Journalism: Our "Framing Gaza" dataset drove major investigative pieces in Daraj Media, Saheeh Masr, and Shorouk News. These collaborations demonstrate our mission: providing evidence that helps journalists ask more challenging questions and hold power accountable.

  • Building a Community of Practice: Data is only as powerful as the people who use it. Through hands-on workshops, like our recent training for Arabic-speaking journalists, we demystify machine learning and equip reporters to conduct their own data-driven investigations.

  • Expanding the Frontier: The "Framing Gaza" project was just the beginning. Our team is developing the next wave of projects to apply our methodology to other critical issues, including gender-based violence, climate change coverage, and evolving narratives around Syria.

Get Involved: Join the Ecosystem

Anmat is a collaborative research ecosystem initiative. Whether you are a journalist with a story idea, a researcher with a new question, or an organisation that needs data for advocacy, we invite you to join our work.
